Neurofeedback
The true secret to change is to focus all of your energy,
not on fighting the old, but, on building the new!
Neurofeedback is a non-invasive therapeutic approach that utilizes real-time monitoring and regulation of brainwave activity to improve cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning. In other words, it is a method of retraining the brain’s connections through monitored mental exercise that reinforces new positive outcomes.
How Does Neurofeedback Work?
During a neurofeedback session, sensors are placed on the forehead and or scalp that will measure brain activity. This is known as an EEG. The data is shown visually or through auditory cues. Then, the individuals are guided on how to modulate that brain activity through tasks or games with the goal of balancing out overactive or underactive areas. Over time, this practice retrains the brain to regulate itself more efficiently without the need for the EEG and feedback.
Youth and Child Neurofeedback at ND Systems
Neurofeedback is a level 1 evidence-based, non-invasive treatment and is often an excellent option in place of or as a replacement for pharmaceuticals. In youth (and Adults), it is a proven, highly effective treatment for ADHD. For younger children, sitting still so that the EEG can effectively read activity can be difficult, which is why ND systems often use a 2-step process that starts with a neurofeedback training system called HEG. This process helps to introduce techniques in smaller steps, is easier to wear and adjust, and it is also less sensitive to movements. Eventually, the child or youth will transition onto the full EEG system. Oftentimes, results start to show themselves with the HEG, whereby children can sit still longer, making way for that transition to happen.
Benefits of Neurofeedback
Non-Invasive
Neurofeedback is 100% non-invasive and pain-free. There are no incisions, and nothing breaks the skin or enters the body.
Medication Free
There are no expensive prescriptions or worry of pharmacological interactions or side effects. No refills to stay on top or concerns about supplies or ordering.
Neurofeedback is often used as an alternative option to medications or as a tool to help with medication reduction.
Highly Individualized
The neurofeedback process is highly tailored to each person’s individual brainwaves or optimal outcomes.
Sustainable Change
Neurofeedback is, by definition, encouraging long-term sustainable change to alleviate dependencies on exterior factors. Neurofeedback is not a dependency treatment method. Results seen, build upon themselves towards a sustained long-term perminnant change.
